Neil Young has been a rock star for a long time, going back to his days with the Buffalo Springfield. He's quite an interesting character, so it was actually kind of tough narrowing this list down to six. Hope you learn something!

1. One of Neil's early bands was the Mynah Birds, led by frontman Rick James. Freak out!

2. Back in the 1960s, Neil drove a 1948 Buick Roadmaster hearse he named Mortimer Hearseburg.

3. Neil met Charles Manson shortly before the Tate-Labianca murders. They were hanging out at Beach Boy Dennis Wilson's house. Neil says "Charlie" picked up a guitar and started playing and singing. Neil said the songs were fascinating.

4. Crosby Stills Nash & Young's second gig was at Woodstock. But you won't see it in the Woodstock movie. Neil refused to be filmed because he thought the cameras were a distraction.

5. In 1983, at his record company's request to make a rock record, he released "Everybody's Rockin'" which was a rockabilly album. This was not exactly what the guys in the ties had in mind.

6. Neil Young has never been afraid to try something out of the mainstream. His album, Earth, features songs performed with Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real.  It also features the sounds of insects, birds and other mammals mixed in, and it's one long track, not split up into individual songs.

I was lucky enough to be in the audience for this jam at Farm Aid 1998 in Chicago. Enjoy.
