Flood Warnings Still in Effect Throughout the Area

UPDATE for Monday, September 10, 2018: Clean-up Volunteers Needed, More Roads are Re-opening

Volunteers are needed to help with more clean-up efforts after flooding throughout the listening area. Emergency Management officials in Sauk County are encouraging people to volunteer by going to the Rec Center in Reedsburg, the Village Hall in North Freedom, the Community Center in Rock Springs, or the Civic Center in Baraboo. Register to help out anytime after 9 this morning. Volunteers will probably be needed throughout the week.

More roads are opening following several weeks of high water, but travel around Sauk County may still be challenging. Check the county road closure website for current road conditions to plan your route:

Officials are monitoring the Rock River as flood water continues to drain downstream from Lake Waubesa (pictured), and Lake Koshkonong. A Flood Warning remains in effect at Afton and Lake Koshkonong where the Rock River is already 2+ feet above flood stage.

Flood Warnings are also in place for Crawford, Green, Green Lake, Jefferson, Rock, and Sauk Counties.

UPDATE for Thursday, September 6, 2018: New Flooding Concerns, Some Roads Still Closed, Volunteers Needed

  • Officials are keeping a close watch on Lake Waubesa and Lake Koshkonong as the flood waters from Lake Monona, and Lake Mendota before it, start draining downstream. Waubesa and Koshkonong already have lake levels higher than normal.
  • Volunteers are needed on Friday in LaValle. The additional rain on Wednesday, is leading to more flooding in Western Sauk County, and increasing the need to ask for help with clean-up efforts. A volunteer reception center is set up at  the LaValle Townhall, 314 Highway 33 in LaValle.You are asked to wear long pants and closed toe shoes (preferably rubber boots), and if you can, bring a hardhat, safety glasses, ear plugs, rubber gloves, and a disposable dust mask. Call 608-355-3200 with any questions about volunteering on Friday.
  • NOTE:  As the water recedes, volunteers will be needed in Reedsburg, Rock Springs, North Freedom, and Baraboo. Listen on-air or check our website for more information.
  • Good news! It's true, we have some good news out of the hard hit area of Richland County where the Fair is still ON! It starts Thursday and runs through the weekend, and though fair-goers may see it scaled-back a bit, organizers hope it will be a chance to bring the community together.

Columbia County

  • Sandbagging is underway along the eastbound lanes of I-90/I-94 near Portage. It has closed the right lane at mile marker 106, along with the ramps in this area.
  • Flooding has closed Highway 113 south of Baraboo between Washington Avenue and County highway W

  • Roads closed are quickly re-opening throughout the Madison Isthmus. The most recent information, is here.

Three school districts remain closed Thursday:

  • Montello School District is closed the rest of the week
  • Reedsburg School District is closed the rest of the week
  • Richland Center Schools are closed today; listen / watch for an update about Friday

Officials in counties across the listening area say flood watches and warnings remain in effect as flooding continues, including cities along the Baraboo River (as pictured near Baraboo in Sauk County).

UPDATE for Tuesday, September 4:  Schools & Roads Closed, Damage Estimates begin in Sauk County

Authorities say there is major flooding along the Baraboo River near Baraboo (pictured), Reedsburg, and Rock Springs. Home damage assessments begin across Sauk County today. Emergency Management officials say they will be in Reedsburg and the LaValle area Tuesday, Rock Springs and North Freedom Wednesday, and the Baraboo area onThursday. Officials suggest if you have been affected by flooding, call 608-355-3200 to report flood damage.

Flood warnings and watches remain across the entire listening area.

These schools are closed today:

  • Hillsboro Schools
  • Mauston Schools
  • Montello Schools
  • Prairie du Chien Schools
  • Reedsburg Schools (Except for high school Freshmen)
  • Richland Schools
  • Royall Schools in Elroy

Roads are closed in Madison. Here is the latest list, and you can check for updates, here.

  • East Washington Avenue has one lane closed in each direction
  • North First Street is closed between East Washington Avenue and East Johnson Street
  • North Livingston Street is closed between East Washington Avenue and East Dayton Street.
  • South Livingston Street is closed south of East Washington Avenue due to construction.
  • Inbound Packers Avenue is closed at Aberg Avenue to route traffic to East Washington Avenue (due to the detour around North First Street)

Lake Monona is more than 7-inches above the 10-year flood level. There is flooding into yards, but so far no roads are closed. You'll find updates, here.
