5 Things You Didn't Know about David Bowie

January 7, 2016
You never really know what to expect from David Bowie. He's constantly reinventing himself, when it comes to his music, art and even his persona. As he turns 69 this week, enjoy these tidbits about the former David Jones that you might not have heard before.

1. He was not born with different colored eyes. It appears they are differently colored because one of his eyes became permanently dilated after a childhood fight with a friend (over a girl).  One other eye-releated issue-- in 2004 he was hit in the eye with a lollipop tossed at him while he was onstage. It was stuck there until a road crew memeber removed it.

2. Bowie voiced the character of Lord Royal Highness on an episode of SpongeBob SquarePants. The character appeared to have eyes of two different colors.

3. He convinced Stevie Ray Vaughan to play guitar on his "Let's Dance" album after seeing Double Trouble perform at the Montreaux Jazz Festival.

4.  At age 17, he was interviewed by the BBC as founder of an organization called "The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Long-haired Men."  (You can watch the video here.)

5. David Bowie has a new album, "Blackstar" that's coming out on his birthday. Rolling Stone gives it four stars and calls it "aggressively experimental."
