5 Things You Didn't Know about Tom Petty

The world was shocked at the loss of Tom Petty Monday night at the age of 66. Not only was he an amazing songwriter, he had a great sense of humor and was a humanitarian (he was the 2017 MusiCares Person of the Year).

Here are some things you may not have known about Tom Petty.

1. His mom's name is Kitty.  Petty said after she died, she would show up as a ghost in his hotel rooms around the world.

2. He traded his slingshot for a box of 45 records after he got to shake Elvis's hand when he was in his hometown making a movie. After he saw the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show, he knew he had to form a band.

3. Tom Petty took guitar lessons from Don Felder of the Eagles.

4.Tom Petty asked Dave Grohl to replace fired Heartbreakers drummer Stan Lynch. Grohl turned him down and formed Foo Fighters instead.

5. Tom Petty ventured out from teh world of rock and roll to acting. Not only did he have a regular role on the animated show "King of the Hill," he had a cameo in the Kevin Costner movie "The Postman."
