Here are some things you may not have known about Tom Petty.

1. His mom's name is Kitty.  Petty said after she died, she would show up as a ghost in his hotel rooms around the world.

2. He traded his slingshot for a box of 45 records after he got to shake Elvis's hand when he was in his hometown making a movie. When he saw the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show, he knew he had to form a band.

3. Tom Petty took guitar lessons from Don Felder of the Eagles.

4.Tom Petty asked Dave Grohl to replace fired Heartbreakers drummer Stan Lynch. Grohl turned him down and formed Foo Fighters instead.

5. Tom Petty ventured out from the world of rock and roll to acting. Not only did he have a regular role on the animated show "King of the Hill," he had a cameo in the Kevin Costner movie "The Postman."
