Ever wonder how your favorite bands keep the creative juices flowing? In a recent Ted Talk, “How to Find a Wonderful Idea,” OK Go, specifically Damian Kulash, eloquently cracked the code in between performances of “This Too Shall Pass” and “The One Moment.”

Known for imaginative music videos like this …

… and this …

… OK Go is a creative bunch, to say the least. So, how does one channel that kind of creativity? Apparently brainstorming is not the answer. (They would know. They’ve won a GRAMMY for their videos.)

According to Kulash, it’s all about getting a ficus to stick out of your wife’s head like a ponytail. Or at least changing your perspective to make it look like said ficus tree in the background aligns with your wife’s head in the foreground. That’s the process that works—not brainstorming, landing on one idea, and revising until the idea is perfect, but playing around with all of your ideas and seeing which ones resonate.

Pretty cool, huh? You can watch the full, 18-minute Ted Talk here
