On Monday, September 4, Coldplay’s Chris Martin hit the BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge without the rest of the band.

Below, watch Martin perform a stripped-down version of the Coldplay song “Hymn For The Weekend” as well as a cover of Paul Simon’s “Graceland.” A brass section and backup singers give each performance a soulful sound.

Martin says that he first heard the Simon jam back in Zimbabwe when he was just 10 years old. Apparently he struck out trying to get a girl’s attention—something he could shrug off because he had good music (“Graceland”) to fall back on. Way to look on the bright side, Chris.

Speaking of spreading positivity, Coldplay recently gave a one-time performance in order to send a little love to Houston in the wake of Hurricane Harvey. And, as Rolling Stone points out, Simon and his wife Edie Brickell sent some positivity as well, donating $1 million each to Hurricane Harvey relief efforts.
