BREESE STEVENS FIELD TO HOST 2016 AUDL CHAMPIONSHIP WEEKEND

MADISON - Jan. 4, 2016 — The four best ultimate teams in North America will come together at the historic Breese Stevens Field to compete in the American Ultimate Disc League’s fifth AUDL Championship Weekend on August 6 and 7, 2016.

The American Ultimate Disc League (AUDL), is the first and largest professional ultimate league in the world, with 26 teams throughout Canada and the United States. The championship will be the culmination of 182 regular season games, with the best teams from each of the league’s four divisions coming to Breese to compete in a Final Four-styled playoff. Two semifinal games will be played on Saturday, August 6, and a championship game on Sunday, August 7. All three games will be streamed live on ESPN3.

“The AUDL is excited to bring our Championship Weekend to Madison,” said AUDL Commissioner, Steve Gordon. “Madison has a strong tradition of ultimate, and the Radicals boast one of the league’s largest and loudest fan bases. We are proud to be able to bring the game to such an engaged city.”

Madison and the surrounding area has long been a home for high level ultimate across all divisions. The local recreational organization, known as Madison Ultimate Frisbee Association (MUFA), was born from the community’s overwhelmingly positive response to playing host for the 1993 world championships. Today, MUFA runs dozens of outreach programs and has more than 4,400 summer league participants, making it one of the largest ultimate leagues in the world. The host team — the Madison Radicals — are a perfect emblem of the talent and enthusiasm of the city, having qualified for Championship Weekend in three consecutive years, including trips to the championship game in 2013 and 2015.

Championship Weekend will make full use of the newly renovated Breese Stevens Field for a one-of-a-kind celebration of ultimate culture. Throughout the weekend, the AUDL and its sponsorship partners will host a variety of affordable, family friendly events: skill clinics with tips from the pros, an interactive challenge zone, a specified tailgating area with nightly social events, and much more.

“I am really excited to be able to show Madison the AUDL on a bigger scale. We plan to make this event the best fan experience ultimate has ever seen,” said Madison Radicals Owner Tim DeByl.

The sport of ultimate has exploded in growth in recent years—more than 5 million people participated in the sport in the U.S., making it one of the fastest growing sports worldwide. The AUDL was established in 2012 to showcase the best athletes in ultimate.
